Short Hair Trends — Bobs, Pixies and Undercuts
Thinking about going short? Whether you're after a sleek bob, a daring pixie cut or an edgy undercut, short hair is having a moment. Here's your guide to the best short hairstyles in 2026 and how to find the right one for you.
Why Go Short?
There's something genuinely liberating about a great short haircut. It's bold, it's easy to maintain, and when it's done well, it can be the most flattering cut you've ever had. Short hair draws attention to your features – your eyes, your cheekbones, your jawline – in a way that longer styles don't always manage.
From a practical standpoint, short hair is a dream. Less time washing, drying and styling means more time doing everything else. And let's be honest, during the Scottish winter, shorter hair dries a lot faster than a head full of long locks.
The key is finding the right short cut for you – and that's where having an experienced stylist makes all the difference. I've been cutting short hair for over 18 years, trained in Vidal Sassoon precision techniques, and I love nothing more than helping someone find their perfect short style.
The Classic Bob
The bob is probably the most versatile short hairstyle there is. It works on practically every face shape and hair type, and there are endless variations to make it your own.
- The blunt bob – One length, usually sitting around the jaw or just above the shoulders. Clean, sharp and incredibly chic. This is a Vidal Sassoon signature and one of my favourite cuts to do.
- The graduated bob – Shorter at the back and slightly longer at the front, creating a lovely shape and movement. Great for adding volume to finer hair.
- The textured bob – Softer and more relaxed, with layers and texture worked through for a lived-in, effortless look.
- The French bob – Chin-length with a fringe, this Parisian-inspired style is having a real moment in 2026. It's chic, it's low maintenance, and it suits most face shapes beautifully.
Who suits a bob? Almost everyone, honestly. The trick is in the detail – the length, the weight, the fringe (or lack of one). That's what we'd work out together in your consultation.
The Pixie Cut
The pixie cut is the ultimate short hair statement. It takes confidence to go this short, but the results can be absolutely stunning. A great pixie cut frames your face beautifully and shows off your features.
- The classic pixie – Short all over with slightly more length on top. Think Audrey Hepburn or Halle Berry. Timeless and elegant.
- The long pixie – A bit more length on top and through the fringe, giving you more styling options. You can sweep it to one side, tousle it for texture, or slick it back for a different look.
- The textured pixie – With choppy layers and plenty of movement. This works brilliantly on naturally wavy or thick hair.
Who suits a pixie? Pixie cuts tend to look amazing on people with strong facial features – defined cheekbones, a good jawline, expressive eyes. But don't rule yourself out if that's not you. The right pixie variation, tailored to your face shape, can work wonders.
Undercuts and Disconnected Styles
Undercuts have moved well beyond their punk origins. In 2026, they're a stylish, edgy option that works for all genders and can be as subtle or dramatic as you like.
- The hidden undercut – Short underneath with longer hair on top that falls over it. You get the coolness of an undercut with the option to hide it when you want a more conservative look.
- The side shave – One side buzzed short, the other left longer. Bold, asymmetric and very cool.
- The nape undercut – The back shaved short while the top stays longer. Looks amazing when you put your hair up.
Undercuts are particularly popular with my clients who are exploring their style or want something that feels uniquely them. They're also brilliant for thick hair – removing weight from underneath can make the rest of your hair sit so much better.
Colour and Short Hair
Short hair and colour are a match made in heaven. Because there's less hair, the colour is more concentrated and impactful. A balayage on a bob looks incredible. A bold fashion colour on a pixie cut is an absolute head-turner. Even subtle highlights can add gorgeous dimension to a short style.
Making the Chop
Nervous about going short? That's completely normal. Here's my advice: don't rush into it, but don't overthink it either. Hair grows back. And in my experience, most people who go short wish they'd done it years ago.
The best approach is to book a free consultation and let's talk it through. Bring pictures of styles you like (and styles you don't – that's just as useful). I'll give you honest advice about what will work with your hair type, your face shape and your lifestyle.
I'm Dom, and I've been cutting hair in Dunfermline for years. Short cuts are one of my real strengths – there's nothing quite like the buzz (pun intended) of someone seeing their new short style for the first time. If you're in Dunfermline, Rosyth, Crossgates, Inverkeithing or anywhere in Fife, I'd love to help you find your perfect short cut.
