Finding an Inclusive Hair Salon in Fife

Going to the hairdresser should be a positive experience for everyone. But for many people, particularly those in the transgender and non-binary community, finding a salon where they feel truly welcome can be a real challenge. Here's why inclusivity matters and what to look for.

Why Salon Inclusivity Matters

For most of us, getting a haircut is a simple pleasure. You walk in, sit down, have a chat, and walk out feeling great. But for some people, the experience can be uncomfortable or even stressful.

Many traditional salons divide their services – and their pricing – strictly by gender. "Ladies' cuts" and "men's cuts" are the norm, with separate price lists that can leave non-binary and transgender clients wondering where they fit in. Some people have reported being turned away, charged unfairly, or made to feel unwelcome simply because of how they present.

In Scotland, and particularly here in Fife, things are getting better. But there's still work to do. Finding a hairdresser who genuinely welcomes everyone shouldn't be difficult – but too often it is.

What Makes a Salon Truly Inclusive?

An inclusive salon isn't just one that says the right words on its website (though that's a good start). It's about the whole experience:

  • Language and communication – Using the client's preferred name and pronouns without making a fuss. Asking "what would you like?" rather than assuming.
  • Pricing by service, not gender – Charging for what's actually involved – the time, the technique, the products – rather than basing prices on whether someone is male or female.
  • A judgement-free atmosphere – Where you can relax and be yourself without feeling watched or questioned.
  • Skill and flexibility – A hairdresser who can work across all styles and isn't limited to "men's" or "women's" techniques.
  • Privacy – For some clients, a one-to-one setting is far more comfortable than a busy, open salon.

Hair by Dom: Everyone is Welcome

When I set up Hair by Dom, I made a conscious decision that my chair would be open to absolutely everyone. Male, female, transgender, non-binary – however you identify, you're welcome.

This isn't a marketing line. It's just how I work. I've always believed that hairdressing is about helping people look and feel their best, and that means meeting every client where they are. I'll ask you what you want, listen to your ideas, give you honest advice, and deliver a cut or colour that makes you feel brilliant.

Working from @HAIR13a in Dunfermline, I offer a private, one-to-one environment. It's just you and me – no other clients, no waiting area full of strangers, no judgement. For many of my clients, that privacy is one of the things they value most.

Gender-Affirming Haircuts

A haircut can be a profoundly important part of someone's journey. For transgender and non-binary individuals, getting a haircut that aligns with their identity can be one of the most affirming experiences imaginable. I take that seriously.

Whether you're growing your hair out, going shorter for the first time, or trying something entirely new, I'll work with you at your pace. We'll talk about what feels right, look at options together, and find a style that makes you feel like you. My 18 years of experience mean I'm comfortable with every type of cut and style – from pixie cuts and undercuts to long layers and everything in between.

Finding the Right Salon in Fife

If you're searching for an inclusive hairdresser in Fife, here are a few tips:

  • Check the salon's website and social media for inclusive language and imagery.
  • Look for reviews from LGBTQ+ clients – they're often the most honest gauge.
  • Don't be afraid to phone ahead and ask questions. A welcoming salon will be happy to chat.
  • Trust your gut – if somewhere feels right, it probably is.
